The USS IOWA (BB61) ports in Long Beach, California, as an active duty ship and receives junior communications officer, Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. It was the launching of a distinguished career.

1990s

After following the Vice Admiral’s stellar career, Major General Peter Gravett meets Gravely at the Fall Gathering of retired admirals and generals in Washington, D.C.

2012

As Secretary of CalVet, Gravett and his wife Blanche attend the opening of the new museum ship Battleship IOWA, where it is docked at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro, California.
